Qurbani, often called or spelled as Qurban or Kurbani, is a religious Muslim ritual. It is
conducted on an Islamic holiday called Eid al-Adha, which translates to the "Festival of
Sacrifice" a practice that holds enormous spiritual importance in Islam. The festival
aims to ensure that blessings from Eid are available for all to share. Needy families who
do not usually have access to protein-rich meat are given meat after animals have been
sacrificed in the name of God.
It is a ritual that reinstates a Muslim's belief in sacrifice, humility, and gratitude to God
for all that is bountiful to Him but not to others. Islamic teachings profess sacrifice and
devotion to the faith, and Qurbani allows every Muslim to show dedication to their faith.
Inspired by our Tanzanian Village's success, the initiative saw Qurbani as an occasion
to make a difference. It also presented a humbling opportunity to pay our respects to
Islam. We devised a plan to collect $150 from whomever we could. In total, we then
collected over $3,000 US Dollars. Collaborating with ISHIK Charity and a local
Tanzanian NGO, we used the funds to honor the festival of Qurbani, distributing protein-
rich meat to sixty families during the festival.
